Since we started having Synergize CommUNiTY Groups back at the beginning of 2022, Matt MacBeth has been a facilitator. He’s walked us through several books he’s written, including the 22 Immutable Laws of Business, Think Critically and Discuss Deeply, and Lead With a Legacy Mindset.
Right now, Matt is leading a group about how to make an impact on the world, both within and outside your day job (Fittingly, it’s called the Impact Multiplier Group)! That’s a big, vague topic, so let’s narrow it down – with input from Matt himself.
Heather: Matt, if you could sum up your CommUNiTY Group in a couple of sentences, how would you do it?
Matt: Think of it as everything you would learn from the best business consultants, combined with a full MBA program, led by someone who writes books and teaches that stuff and has actually done it all… but in a much more relaxed environment, and in a much more interactive conversational format.
H: How has it evolved over time?
M: we’ve met at different locations, different times, even twice in a week… we’ve discussed relevant topics… some of the topics, like ChatGPT, didn’t exist a year or so ago! But it’s always been thought provoking and an opportunity to learn valuable skills.
H: What’s one conversation or session you remember that felt particularly awesome?
M: Maybe the one where we used a paper ruler to look at our lives as a timeline – how our past influences our today – and how we don’t have much time left… so we need to be intentional on how we spend our time and who we spend it with.
H: What’s the impact you hope to make through this group?
M: I hope that this meetup encourages other legacy members to want to lead other groups – or maybe even take over this group! Success for me happens when someone takes on my current role, so I can go create a new one.
H: What do you like best about CommUNiTY Groups in general?
M: Smaller, more personal interactions where we can build deeper, more authentic relationships.
H: What has your group taught you, as a facilitator?
M: There is so much good stuff out there, but you have to take action, show up, and participate for it to matter. Also, it has taught me that I’m more fulfilled when I’m creating and leading than when I’m consuming and passive.
